- В песне "Last Hour" ("Последний час") фантастическое соло.
Как ты его сочинил?
- Когда люди говорят об этом альбоме, они никогда не упоминают эту песню. Это моё любимое соло в альбоме. Во время записи меня как будто не было в студии. Песня взяла меня и унесла куда-то. И после того, как я услышал соло в записи, я спросил: "Это я сделал?"
Это было довольно круто и я по-прежнему получаю удовольствие, когда его слушаю.


- Было время – с 10 до 19 лет, когда я много тренировался – по 12-14 часов в день. Я не ел, я не ходил в школу, я не жил. (смеётся) (...) Тебе не нужно соревноваться с кем-то, ты просто жаждешь сделать красивую музыку, стать музыкантом, а не просто крутым гитаристом.


- Я также играю на ударных, причём даже лучше, чем на гитаре! Возможно, это помогает. Каждый инструмент, на котором ты играешь, может помочь тебе быть лучше, как музыкант.


- Мы уже работали над "III Sides" до выхода "Porno". Я написал часть песен и хотел, чтобы оркестровые аранжировки как для "III Sides" были уже и на "Porno". Много идей было уже готово.


- Когда я покинул "Extreme", я думал, что они могли бы сделать альбом без меня. Я даже думал, что это будет не плохо. Я говорил Гэри работать с Марком (Чероном) - он классный гитарист и композитор.


-А вот здесь есть секрет: если ты увидишь моего брата Луиса, играющего на гитаре, ты начнёшь думать, что он лучше меня. Он невероятный! (...) Глядя на его игру, я уделяю большое внимание всем деталям.


- "Schizophonic" также особенный альбом для меня, не только из-за гитар, но также из-за песен и историй, рассказанных в тех текстах. Этот альбом содержит мои любимые партии ударных.


- Ты используешь исключительно сталь для акустики?
- Да, от Washburn. Я использовал нейлон лишь однажды, когда мне нужно было получить более тёплый звук.


- Некоторые говорят, что при быстрой игре отсутствуют эмоции, но я с этим не согласен. Однако большинство гитаристов из 80-х действительно играли без эмоций. (...) Я знал, что это не будет длиться вечно.


- А теперь главный вопрос: Брайан Мэй или Эдди Ван Хален?
- Ничего себе! (смеётся) Ну, я бы сказал что Брайан, так как не было бы Эдди без него. Мне кажется, Брайан достаточно повлиял на Эдди и, вообще, на звучание 80-х. У него был очень продвинутый тон, начиная с 70-х. Кристально чистый. Брайан звучал в 80-х так, как никто не звучал до него.
Конечно же, я фанат Эдди Ван Халена, но если мне нужно сделать выбор как композитору, то я выбираю Брайана. Я думаю, что в одном альбоме "Queen" больше музыки, гитар, вокала и интересных аранжировок, чем в двух или трёх альбомах "Van Halen".


- Я думаю, что "Rising Force" показал нам одни из самых сложных гитарных партий когда-либо. В одном альбоме Ингви (Yngwie Malmsteen) дал нам очень много.


- Я намерен записать новый альбом "Extreme" и записать что-нибудь с группой, с которой работал у Рианны. Мы сделали несколько джемов. - Ты шутишь?
- Нет, я серьёзно! Однажды я вышел на сцену с "Extreme" и только тогда понял, что забыл накрасить ногти. Я запаниковал. Я попросил тайм-аут перед началом и попросил парня из техперсонала принести мне что-нибудь типа ручки накрасить ногти. Я сделал это очень быстро, за кулисами, до начала выступления.


- А вот интересно, если сейчас будет много музыкантов с накрашенными ногтями играть?
- Ну... гитарист Рианны (Адам Росс – прим. пер.) решил накрасить ногти после того, как я рассказал ему эту историю. Сейчас он уже больше не может играть без лака на ногтях. (смеётся)

NUNO:
- I have around 80 new songs for Extreme. It's quite a lot. I don't want to record another record like SdR. The ideas I have for new material is intended to please new fans, old fans or even lose a bunch of them (laughs).


- Muse is an example of the reason why I like music, which is because they sound different. It's the mix of several influences, including strong guitar parts, lots of keyboards, elements from Queen and vocals and melodies from Radiohead. It's one of the most interesting bands these days.


- The interesting thing about this album (SdR) is that we created it together from beginning to end. It wasn't like before, when I wrote parts by myself, recorded a demo and then the band figured it out to record. The process was more natural. Our intention wasn't to make something different, we just wanted to sound like when we're playing.


(Q) The track Last Hour has a fantastic solo. How did you create it?
- When people talk about the record they never mention this song. It has my favorite solo on the album. During the recording, it was like I wasn't there. The song took me someplace else. It was like asking, after I heard the solo ready: "Did I do this?" It was pretty cool and I still have fun when I hear it.


- There was a time, from 10 to 19 years old, when I trained a lot - from 12 to 14 hours a day. I didn't eat, I didn't go to school, I didn't live. (laughs) (...) You don't need to compete with anyone, you just need to make beautiful music (...) you have to become a musician, not just a great guitarist.


- I also play the drums, even better than I play the guitar! Maybe that helps. Every instrument you play can help you be a better musician.


- We were already working on III Sides before Porno. I wrote part of the record before Porno, and I wanted that the orchestrations on 3 Sides were already on Porno. Lots of ideas were already ready.


- When I left Extreme, I thought they would do an album without me. I even thought it would be good. I told Gary to work with Mark (Cherone), a great guitarist and songwriter.


- Here's a secret: if you see my brother (Luis) playing the guitar, you'll think he's better than me. He's unbelievable! (...) Seeing him play, I paid a lot of attention to all the details.


- Schizophonic is also an special album for me, not only because of the guitars, but due to the songs and the stories those lyrics tell. It's the record that contains my favorite parts of drums.


(Q) Do you only use steel for acoustics?
- Yes, from Washburn. I only used nylon once, because I needed that warmer sound.


- Some say that fast players have no emotion, but I disagree. However, most players from the 80s really had no emotion (...) I knew that wouldn't last forever.


(Q) A direct question: Brian May or Eddie Van Halen?
- Wow! (laughs) Well, I'd say Brian because there would be no Eddie without him. I think Brian influenced Eddie a lot, and the sound of the 80s. He had a very advanced tone since the beginning of the 70s, pretty clean. Brian sounded like the 80s before anyone. I'm obviously a big EVH fan, but as a writer, if I have to choose one, I stick to Brian. I think there's more music, guitars, vocals and interesting arrangements in a Queen album than in 2 or 3 from VH.


- I think Rising Force showed us some of the most difficult guitar parts ever. Yngwie gave us a lot in a single album.


- I intend to record a new Extreme record and record something with the band that tours with Rihanna. We did some jams. The bassist is amazing, the drummer has played with Stevie Wonder and the keyboardist is a nut, he plays some nice jazz and fusion. It has been a lot of fun to play with them - a little fusion, funk, freestyle. It's still just some jams, but in the future I want to record something with them in that style.


- When you play with Paul Gilbert, it's like every rehearsal is the real thing. I had the chance to work with him for a week and we played every day, rehearsals and shows, and he made no mistakes. It's almost unhuman. The guy never missed, be it on my songs, his songs, Pat Travers'... it's like he's a robot! The best part of this experience was a day when after the rehearsal everyone went away, including Steve Hackett. I went to the drums, John Paul Jones picked up the bass and Paul on guitar. We played around 15 Led Zeppelin songs. After 2 hours, JPJ looked at me and said: "How do you know all those songs on drums?" And Paul knew the lyrics, the guitar parts, the soloes, everything! It was one of the most incredible experiences: to play Led Zeppelin with JPJ.


- After spending some time painting my hand nails, I thought: "Enough with that. It's been a year, it's enough". And what followed was that I couldn't play the guitar the same way after removing the polish. I had spent so much time seeing the painted nails in the guitar neck, that without them I felt I wasn't playing the same way. With the polish, I visualized the black nails on the guitar neck and thought about the ideas and where to play them.


(Q) You're kidding, right?
- No, I'm serious! Once, I was onstage with Extreme and only then I realized I had forgotten to paint my nails. I panicked. I asked for a timeout before a song started and I asked the roadie to bring me some type of pen to paint the nails. I had to do this quickly, beside the stage, before playing.


(Q) I wonder if now there will be lots of players painting their nails to play?
- Well, a guitarist on tour with Rihanna decided to paint them after I told him this story. Now, he can't play anymore without painting them (laughs).
